The 17th Annual Creek Relay saw a welcome return to a route closer to that originally set by Fuckbuck back in 1995.
The registration point was near the Jadaf Shipyards, close to the site of the old waterskiing club. With the start point along the Ras Al Khor Road, at the top of the Creek, the route took runners through the flamingo sanctuary back to the registration point.
With 22 teams participating, the start was staggered with the slower teams setting off first. Michael Jackson, the only solo runner set off first, leaving his white glove behind. The Creeking Joints weren't far behind with Cock Stop cunningly logging any possible pee spots on his GPS.
The second leg took runners past the Jadaf Shipyard and through the old fishing village where dhows and lobster pots used to be made. Under Business Bay Bridge, then on to the changeover point at the metro station at Garhoud Bridge. Leg three followed a route under Garhoud Bridge then along to the Law Courts. Knobbing Donkey cunningly overtook Helmetthe**nt, but only because she asked him to wait for her at the traffic lights!
Leg 4 took runners alongside the Creek, through the Textile Souk and across to Shindaga. With Pisto and Kung Fu going head to head, the race was on! Our Big Fat Creek Wedding were flying along – clearly married life has made them faster at running …(away from each other maybe??)
The second half of the race took the runners from Shindaga Tunnel all the way to the Chamber of Commerce. Special mention to Helen (Mrs Shitndale!) for her virgin run with the Creek. By this stage the faster teams, like The Dubai Creek Unstable Milers, Our Big Fat Creek Wedding and Skeleton Crew, were catching up the slower teams.
The next leg went alongside the creek past the Creek Golf Club, and onto the path leading up to the water at Garhoud Bridge before turning left and following the footpath all the way to the Honda Showroom. Off towards Ikea then through Al Badia, leaving the Stompers waiting for their lost driver to make an appearance. Oops.
With a last minute change of checkpoint at Festival City, due to some other much less interesting event, there was some confusion, with runners arriving at the check from every direction. Fair play to Shrek and Decent-in-Tent for logging all the times, which didn't seem to interrupt their beer drinking too much. Sadly Michael Jackson, the only solo runner this year, missed the check entirely and perhaps more importantly missed his Isostar. Luckily for him the Four Non Blondes took his special drink and caught him up during the final stage. Perhaps the only non-blonde thing they’d done all day!
And so to the final stage … from Festival City along by the marina front, across Business Bay, back past Jadaf Shipyard and finally back to the run site for a well-earned beer or two.
All the teams except for Slow & Slim made it back in good time before the Shamal hit. Taking shelter in cars, abandoning the beer (momentarily!), trying to come up with a plan B. Sadly some of the teams set off home, leaving only the hard core hash teams to participate in the circle and prize-giving. Slow & Slim just made it back in time, having been caught in the Shamal during their last stage.
With Shitndale as RA, proceedings got underway with him handing out prizes and sardonic quips in equal measure. The wind was still blowing and all those in need of comfort breaks, did so at their own peril. Just ask Urine Trouble! Well done to the Dubai Creek Unstable Road Milers for being the fastest open team, and to Blink 182 for being closest to their open predicted time. Congratulations to Michael Jackson for completing the 40km on his own, only a week after running the marathon. Well done STFU for completing the route on your bike, you shortcutting b**tard.
A huge thank you to all the Marshals and those who helped out both on the day and before the event. Orrsum & Mrs Orrsum did an Awesome job keeping the food sand free. Fellatio, your photos are stunning.
Great to see many of the regulars back - Blink 182, the Dubai Creek Unstable Road Milers, Angry Pirates, Skeleton Crew, Hot Dogs, Karama Sutra, Four Non Blondes, One Bob and Three Spending Pennies, the Creaking Joints, Tuesday Tossers and not forgetting Our Big Fat Creek Wedding, oh and of course STFU on his bike.
The Creek look forward to welcoming you all back for next year - we may even order sunshine for the circle!
